Cultural Values

Concept Transdisciplinary Synonym

A transdisciplinary research area informed largely by social psychology, social anthropology and cultural studies.

Cultural values are the dominant principles or standards upheld and championed by a society - they are reinforced (usually very subtly) by the messages we receive and the experiences we have, which we internalise and use to help us make decisions about what is important in our lives.

Cultural values are tied to the world order we are a part of and are often consistently championed by people and organisations with a vested interest in the status quo.

Social psychology and Indigenous wisdom traditions both assert that colonial modernity is perpetuating a ‘crisis of values’.
