Enculturated cognition is the living, cognitive-science form of Enculturation: Richard Menary’s research programme in 4E philosophy of mind, holding that culture doesn’t merely fill minds with content — it transforms how we think, through learning-driven neural plasticity and our entanglement with cultural practices, symbol systems and tools.
Menary’s cognitive tools are composite: “physical objects, representational systems, and cognitive practices for the physical manipulation of the tool,” integrated into our cognitive systems through enculturation. Reading, writing and mathematics are the worked examples — capacities no brain evolved for, built by cultural practice reshaping older neural circuitry.
This matters to us for two reasons. It is the current, peer-reviewed warrant for our Canvas’s claim that changing minds means changing conditions — practices, tools, environments — not just messages. And it connects the Canvas directly to the embodied and distributed account of cognition (Embodied Cognition, Distributed Cognition, Cognitive Ecology) that underpins this whole body of work.
